Are you a Cardio Machine? Cause you absolutely shouldn’t be! Cardio is great of course, there is nothing wrong with it whatsoever. But if you are not supplementing cardio workouts with strength training workouts you are not maximizing your efforts.

The thing about losing weight, and being in shape is that you want to increase your metabolism, it will help you burn more calories, and increase the blood flow throughout your body which increases the effectiveness of heart pumping workouts. The best way to increase your metabolism is not through strict cardio sessions 6 times a week, nor is it through strict weight lifting sessions. The myth exists that if you run enough you will increase cardio and lose weight, but this is not even close to the most effective technique.

Lean muscle increases metabolism! you need to build your muscles, because by increasing the muscle in your body, your metabolism has to increase in order to feed the muscles with the required nutrients. So you can run all you want but if you are not doing equal amounts of strength training exercises, then you are not reaching your full potential in weight loss.

This doesn’t mean you need to bench press 100 pounds 20 times either. It’s enough to get out there and use light weights alternating between muscle groups in rapid succession. The benefit of this is that as one set of muscles becomes tired, say your biceps, you immediately switch to shoulder exercises, thus keeping the blood pumping, and keeping the metabolism revving up. You can do intervals of 30 second to 1 minute exercises for 4-6 minutes of just alternating between muscle groups(curls, then shoulder presses, then step back lunges, then rows, and whatever else you can find). Then just take a breather and do it again for another 4-6 minutes until you have gone through that cycle 5-6 times. That’s only roughly 25-30 minutes of intense weight lifting with light weight exercises, but it increases the metabolic rate of your body at an incredible rate!

Remember, strength training doesn’t have to involve intimidating dumbbells that require you to fail, it can be high intensity training with lighter dumbbells that will allow you to alternate muscle groups for 4-6 minutes straight per round which will double the effectiveness of your workout routine. So avoid strict cardio and implement a high intensity strength training routine to alternate days with your cardio day. I guarantee you will see results at a much faster rate, and you will love the lean muscle you will develop as the fat melts away.
